Angry Birds Blues is a puzzle slingshot game by Combined Entertainment based on the original unfinished concept, now known as the Legacy Edition. The original project was abandoned by Rovio due to a heavy amount of negative reception and wanting to develop other games. Eventually, though, Combined picked up the project and brought it back to life. They made an agreement with Rovio to publish the game and even some of the old artists and coders decided to help.
The aim of this game is to completely overhaul the storyline, gameplay and artwork, yet keeping — as well as amplifying — some of the game's original ideas, such as dialogue, which has been replaced with comics, based off the Angry Birds Comics series. It was released on Android and the Nintendo Switch for beta testing but would later be released on other platforms.
Like Angry Birds Stella, it's an Angry Birds spin-off that focuses on one of the birds. This time, the Blues are being featured, along with Bubbles, Matilda and Silver. It's also the game where Plum and Garretto make their debut. It also ties in a bit to the Angry Birds Blues series.
Plot[]
Beginning of Game[]
The Blues — Jim, Jake and Jay — and Bubbles were playing a game of hide and seek in Slimy Swamps on Pelican Island, with Jay being the finder. Before they start, they draw a giant line marked with red chalk, making sure they don't cross that area and get lost. Jake obeys the rules by hiding within that area. However, Jim and Bubbles didn't do so, exceeding the red line into a... potentially dangerous area with some unsafe looking trees that gets progressively darker and darker. Suddenly, they enter a cave. Bubbles gets kidnapped. Jim gets frightened, but attempts to put up a fight. He then sees a pair of purple eyes, and tries to flee the cave, but also gets kidnapped. He screams, alarming Jake and Jim.
After Level 1-5[]
After breaking Bubble's cage, Jim thanks Jake and Jay, telling them that a group of snakes Jake mocks him for not following the rules and his immaturity. However, Jay is more concerned about Bubbles. Jim tells them that Bubbles is further down the cave.
After Level 1-10[]
After beating the group of snakes, Bubbles also thanks them in return. They decide they should leave. Suddenly, however, a group of rocks block the way behind them and now, they are forced to find an alternate exit, which would be further down the cave.
Before Level 1-13[]
Further down into the cave, Bubbles comes across a green-coloured berry — the Tremor-Berry. He eats it before Jay could warn him, this causes his stomach to rumble, creating a tremor.
Before Level 1-25[]
Though they finally reach the end of the cave. It's dark, but there's an engine heard running. A problematic Ross and Mechanic Pig show up.
Gameplay[]
The gameplay is reminiscent of a lot of the quote-unquote classic games, including Angry Birds Stella, and even the OG itself, Angry Birds Classic. In each level, pigs are sheltered inside of structures comprising of blocks like glass, hay, wood, concrete and stone, alongside other objects. To defeat said pigs, birds of various abilities are launched using the slingshot. Depending on the chapter the level is set in, there may also be environmental modifiers that crank up the difficulty.
What sets it apart from a lot of the newer games is that it uses the old format, where the player doesn't get to choose their birds most of the time. In some levels, however, players can choose their birds in the form of cards, like Angry Birds 2. Though, all levels will have waves. On each wave, the number of birds and who the birds are will vary.
By popping a pig or destroying a block or object, you receive score. For stronger pigs, blocks or objects, you may receive more score. For the first score you get, you will receive a highscore, and if you're able to top that score, that will become your highscore. The same goes with any other current highscore.
At the end of the game, stars are used to indicate your success in the level. Stars are achieved via completing objectives. The first star is easily obtained; by completing the level. The second star and third star are stars where an objective needs to be reached. A common instance of a second-star objective is getting a highscore of a certain value, while a third-star objective could be limiting yourself to having a certain number of birds launched from the slingshot.
